Hi, my name is Junghi Woo and I am a second year student at Osgoode! I work for the St. Stephen’s Division at the Osgoode Mediation Clinic. The Osgoode Mediation Clinic provides free mediation services, conflict resolution training and coaching to York University students and the surrounding regions. We are specialized in 5 areas: youth conflicts, housing disagreements, family disputes, campus related issues and personal and professional conflicts. What do Caseworkers in the Osgoode Mediation Clinic (OMC) do? Your tasks depend on your division at the Osgoode Mediation Clinic. Here is my insight on the St. Stephen’s Division. As a caseworker, these are my tasks:
Additionally, there is a class-based component which involves readings and reflections on mediation, its societal impacts, and its development through decades. All OMC students are also trained and certified to be a mediator at the beginning of the term! Why Should You Join the OMC? The OMC contributes to alternative dispute resolution (ADR) which is quite significant in the context of access to social justice. It is a clear fact that many cannot afford legal services and legal aid Ontario can be inaccessible as well. ADR is a method to resolve people’s conflicts without putting them through the mental, emotional and financial burden they have to endure going through the legal system. Being an OMC caseworker is the most practical experience I have gotten throughout law school. You gain experience in client communication and conflict resolution. You learn how to stay calm and de-escalate emotional conflict. You learn how to guide parties to a mutually beneficial solution. These are all skills that will be useful to your personal, academic and professional development in this field. The level of independence you get co-leading mediations with a professional mediator is unique to this program, and I cannot recommend it enough. As an experiential education program, the OMC is a 9-credit course which counts for OPIR hours and satisfies the Praxicum requirement.
